Surprising Uses of Vicks VapoRub You Probably Didn’t Know About

Vicks VapoRub is best known as a topical ointment used for temporary relief of cough and minor muscle and joint aches. Some viral posts claim it has dozens of other uses, but many of those claims aren’t supported by good evidence.

Here are some uses worth knowing about—and some to approach cautiously.

1. Temporary Relief of Cough

When used according to the label, VapoRub can provide temporary relief of cough associated with the common cold in people of the appropriate age.

2. Minor Muscle and Joint Aches

It can be rubbed onto muscles and joints to provide temporary relief of minor aches and pains. The menthol and camphor produce a cooling sensation that can make discomfort feel less noticeable.

3. A Moisturizing Effect on Dry Skin

Because the product contains a petroleum-based ointment, it can make dry skin feel softer. That doesn’t mean it treats the underlying cause of chronically dry or cracked skin.

4. Toenail Fungus? Be Careful With This Claim

Small studies have investigated VapoRub for toenail fungal infections, but the evidence isn’t strong enough to consider it a proven treatment. If you have a persistent fungal nail infection, an appropriate antifungal treatment is more reliable.

Viral Uses That Aren’t Well Established

You’ll often see claims that putting VapoRub:

  • In the belly button treats constipation

  • On the feet treats a cough

  • On the forehead cures headaches

  • On the abdomen burns fat

  • On the neck treats thyroid problems

There isn’t good clinical evidence supporting these uses.

Important Safety Precautions

  • External use only.

  • Don’t put it in your mouth or swallow it.

  • Don’t apply it to broken or damaged skin.

  • Avoid the eyes and mucous membranes.

  • Don’t use it in or under the nose.

  • Keep it away from young children; camphor can be toxic if swallowed.

  • Follow the product’s age and application instructions.

Bottom Line

VapoRub can be useful for its intended topical applications, but many of the “secret uses” circulating online are anecdotal rather than medically established. A cooling or soothing sensation doesn’t necessarily mean the product is treating the underlying condition.
