A Natural and Effective Remedy for Relieving Constipation

Detail

For occasional constipation, one of the simplest natural approaches is to increase fiber and fluids gradually. Prunes (dried plums) are particularly useful because they provide fiber and naturally contain sorbitol, which can help draw water into the bowel.

Simple Remedy

Try 4–6 prunes daily, along with plenty of water.

You can:

  • Eat them directly as a snack.

  • Soak them in water overnight and eat them in the morning.

  • Add chopped prunes to oatmeal or yogurt.

Other Helpful Habits

  • Drink enough fluids unless you’ve been told to restrict them.

  • Eat fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, beans, oats, and whole grains.

  • Increase fiber gradually to reduce bloating and gas.

  • Take a daily walk or maintain other gentle physical activity.

  • Don’t regularly ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.

Another Good Option: Kiwi

2–3 kiwis per day can also help some people with constipation because they provide fiber and water and may improve bowel regularity.

When to Get Medical Advice

Constipation should be evaluated if it is persistent or accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or a sudden major change in bowel habits.

If you have severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and cannot pass stool or gas, seek urgent medical care rather than trying a home remedy.
