Put a Glass of Salt in Your Car: Here’s Why Some Drivers Try It

You may have seen the viral tip suggesting that placing a glass or bowl of salt inside a car can solve several common problems. There is a small amount of truth behind the idea, but some online claims exaggerate what salt can actually do.

1. Salt Can Help With Small Amounts of Moisture

Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it can attract and hold some moisture from the surrounding air.

A small container of salt inside a vehicle may therefore absorb a limited amount of humidity. However, ordinary table salt has limited moisture-absorbing capacity, so it isn’t a substitute for a proper automotive dehumidifier.

2. It May Help With Mild Condensation

If your vehicle has a slightly damp interior, reducing some humidity can potentially help with minor condensation.

But if you regularly find wet carpets, fogged windows, or water inside the vehicle, don’t rely on salt. There may be a leaking door seal, windshield seal, blocked drain, or another problem that needs to be fixed.

3. It Won’t “Remove All Bad Smells”

Another popular claim is that salt eliminates odors.

Salt itself isn’t a powerful general-purpose car deodorizer. Persistent odors are better addressed by finding and removing the source, such as spilled food, damp carpeting, mold, or dirty upholstery.

4. Be Careful With Salt Around Your Car

This is particularly important.

Salt can contribute to corrosion of metal when moisture is present. Don’t spill loose salt onto seats, carpeting, electrical components, metal surfaces, or the vehicle’s body.

If you want to experiment with the idea, keep the salt in a stable, leak-proof container where it cannot tip over.

5. Better Ways to Control Car Humidity

If your goal is to keep the interior dry:

  • Check for water leaks.
  • Don’t leave wet clothing or umbrellas inside.
  • Dry wet floor mats promptly.
  • Use the vehicle’s air conditioning, which helps remove moisture from the cabin air.
  • Make sure drains and seals are functioning properly.
  • Consider a reusable automotive moisture absorber for persistent humidity.

Bottom Line

A glass of salt may absorb a small amount of moisture, but it isn’t a miracle solution for condensation, odors, or dampness. If your car repeatedly becomes humid or wet, finding the source of the moisture will be much more effective than simply placing salt inside it.
