My Nana Taught Me This Hack to Make Dusty Blinds Sparkle in 2 Minutes
Dusty blinds can be surprisingly annoying to clean, especially when every slat seems to collect a layer of dust. My nana’s simple trick is to use a clean microfiber cloth and a little diluted white vinegar to quickly wipe away surface dust and grime.
What You Need
- 1 clean microfiber cloth
- 1 cup of warm water
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- A small bowl or spray bottle
- A dry microfiber cloth
For delicate or natural-material blinds, check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions first. Vinegar is not suitable for every surface.
Step 1: Close the Blinds
Turn the blinds so the slats are facing the same direction. This makes it easier to wipe across several slats without constantly adjusting them.
Step 2: Mix the Cleaning Solution
Combine equal parts warm water and white vinegar. Lightly dampen your microfiber cloth with the mixture.
Don’t soak the blinds. Excess moisture can damage certain materials and may leave water marks.
Step 3: Wipe Each Slat
Run the damp microfiber cloth gently along each slat. Work from the top downward so loosened dust doesn’t settle on areas you’ve already cleaned.
For especially dusty blinds, shake or rinse the cloth occasionally so you’re removing dust rather than spreading it around.
Step 4: Give Them a Quick Dry Wipe
Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove remaining moisture. This also picks up any fine dust left behind.
A Helpful Shortcut
For regular maintenance, you may not even need a cleaning solution. A dry microfiber cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment can remove loose dust quickly.
Cleaning your blinds every couple of weeks can also prevent dust from building into a thicker layer that takes much longer to remove.
One Important Tip
Avoid spraying cleaning solution directly onto blinds, especially near cords, mechanisms, windowsills, or electrical components. Put the solution on the cloth instead.
The trick isn’t really “zero work,” but it can make a dusty-blind cleanup much faster and easier when you’re dealing with ordinary household dust.
