The “Nana’s Vaseline Trick” for Wrinkles
There’s a grain of truth behind this viral beauty claim: Vaseline (petrolatum) is an excellent occlusive moisturizer, so it can make dry skin look smoother and fine lines less noticeable temporarily. But mixing two household ingredients into it won’t erase wrinkles permanently.
A simple, safer version
You don’t actually need to mix anything into Vaseline:
-
Wash your face gently.
-
Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer while your skin is slightly damp.
-
Apply a very thin layer of plain Vaseline over it, preferably at night.
-
In the morning, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen.
The Vaseline helps reduce water loss from the skin, while sunscreen helps prevent UV exposure from worsening wrinkles and pigmentation.
What should you NOT mix with it?
Avoid viral recipes containing lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste, hydrogen peroxide, or undiluted essential oils. These can irritate or damage the skin and potentially cause darker marks.
What actually helps wrinkles over time?
For more lasting improvement, daily sunscreen and topical retinoids have considerably better evidence than DIY Vaseline mixtures. Retinoids can cause irritation, so introduce them carefully and seek professional advice if you have sensitive skin or other skin conditions.
Bottom line: Nana’s Vaseline may help with dryness and the temporary appearance of fine lines, but there is no proven two-ingredient mixture that can “erase wrinkles for good.”
