- ½ cup (50 g) shredded cheddar or Italian-blend cheese
- ½ cup sliced pepperoni
Optional toppings
- Sliced mushrooms
- Diced bell pepper
- Black olives
- Sliced jalapeños
- Diced tomatoes
- Cooked bacon
- Italian sausage
- Fresh basil
- Parmesan cheese
- Red pepper flakes
Instructions
1. Brown the meat
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef or Italian sausage.
Cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through.
Drain excess grease if necessary.
2. Add the vegetables
Add the diced onion and cook for 2–3 minutes, until softened.
Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
If using mushrooms or bell peppers, add them at this stage and cook until slightly tender.
3. Season
Stir in the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt.
Cook for another minute so the spices become fragrant.
4. Add the pizza sauce
Pour the pizza sauce into the skillet.
Stir everything together and simmer for 3–5 minutes.
Taste and adjust the seasoning.
For a spicier bowl, add red pepper flakes.
Assemble the Pizza Bowls
5. Portion the mixture
Divide the meat and sauce mixture among 4 oven-safe bowls or ramekins.
Alternatively, keep everything in the skillet if it’s oven-safe.
6. Add the toppings
Arrange sliced pepperoni and any additional pizza toppings over the meat mixture.
Sprinkle generously with mozzarella and cheddar.
Add a little Parmesan if desired.
7. Bake
Place the bowls on a baking sheet.
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
8. Broil for extra browning
For beautifully golden cheese, switch the oven to broil for 1–2 minutes.
Watch carefully so the cheese doesn’t burn.
9. Rest and serve
Let the bowls cool for 2–3 minutes before serving.
Top with fresh basil, Parmesan, and red pepper flakes.
Pepperoni Pizza Bowl
For a classic pepperoni version, use:
- Ground beef
- Pizza sauce
- Mozzarella
- Pepperoni
- Italian seasoning
- Parmesan
Add extra pepperoni underneath the cheese as well as on top for pockets of crispy, savory flavor.
Supreme Pizza Bowl
Add:
- Italian sausage
- Pepperoni
- Mushrooms
- Bell peppers
- Onions
- Black olives
- Mozzarella
This gives you all the flavors of a loaded supreme pizza without the crust.
Buffalo Chicken Pizza Bowl
Replace the beef with 2 cups shredded cooked chicken.
Mix with:
- ¼ cup buffalo sauce
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Top with mozzarella and a little crumbled blue cheese.
Bake until bubbling.
High-Protein Pizza Bowl
For a protein-heavy version:
- Use lean ground beef or chicken.
- Increase the meat to 1¼ lbs.
- Use part-skim mozzarella.
- Add cottage cheese to the sauce mixture.
For a creamy protein boost, blend ½ cup cottage cheese until smooth and stir it into the warm pizza sauce before assembling.
Vegetarian Pizza Bowl
Replace the meat with:
- Mushrooms
- Zucchini
- Bell peppers
- Spinach
- Black olives
Sauté the vegetables until their excess moisture has cooked away before adding the sauce.
This prevents a watery pizza bowl.
Air Fryer Version
Divide the mixture between small oven-safe ramekins.
Top with cheese and pepperoni.
Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 5–8 minutes, until the cheese is melted and golden.
Keep a close eye on the cheese during the final few minutes.
Make It Extra Cheesy
Use:
- 1 cup mozzarella
- ½ cup provolone
- ½ cup cheddar
- 2 tbsp Parmesan
The combination creates a stretchy, browned, intensely cheesy topping.
Tips for the Best Pizza Bowls
Choose a thick sauce
A thick pizza sauce prevents the bowls from becoming watery.
Cook vegetables first
Mushrooms, zucchini, and other watery vegetables should be sautéed before adding them.
Don’t overfill
Leave a little room at the top so the cheese doesn’t bubble over.
Broil briefly
A quick broil gives you that classic browned-pizza-cheese finish.
Let them rest
The filling will be extremely hot straight from the oven. A few minutes of resting also allows the sauce to thicken slightly.
Meal Prep
Prepare the meat and sauce mixture up to 3 days ahead.
Store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
When ready to eat, portion into bowls, add cheese and toppings, and bake until hot and bubbling.
You can also assemble the bowls ahead of time and refrigerate them, then bake when needed.
Approximate Nutrition
Using lean ground beef, low-sugar pizza sauce, and part-skim mozzarella, one serving is approximately:
- Calories: 400–475
- Protein: 35–40 g
- Carbohydrates: 8–12 g
- Fat: 24–30 g
The exact numbers depend on the meat, cheese, sauce, and toppings you choose.
Best Finish
For the ultimate crustless pizza bowl, layer seasoned beef, thick pizza sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella, and Parmesan, then bake until bubbling and broil until the cheese develops golden-brown spots. Finish with fresh basil and a pinch of red pepper flakes for that classic pizzeria flavor—without the crust.
