Crispy on the edges, soft in the center, and loaded with bubbling mozzarella and savory pizza toppings, this Air Fryer Pizza Toast is one of the quickest ways to satisfy a pizza craving. It’s perfect for breakfast, lunch, an after-school snack, or a fast weeknight bite.
Ingredients
- 4 slices thick-cut bread
- ½ cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp dried oregano
- ¼ cup sliced pepperoni
- 2 tbsp finely diced bell pepper
- 2 tbsp finely diced onion
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil or parsley
- Olive oil spray
Optional toppings
- Cooked Italian sausage
- Diced ham
- Cooked bacon
- Mushrooms
- Black olives
- Jalapeños
- Banana peppers
- Cherry tomatoes
- Red pepper flakes
Instructions
1. Prepare the bread
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 2–3 minutes.
Place the bread slices on a cutting board.
If your bread is very soft, lightly toast it in the air fryer for 1–2 minutes before adding the toppings. This helps prevent the sauce from making the center soggy.
2. Add the pizza sauce
Spread approximately 1½–2 tablespoons of pizza sauce over each slice.
Leave a small border around the edges.
Don’t use too much sauce—the bread can become soggy and the toppings may slide off.
3. Add the cheese
Sprinkle mozzarella evenly over each slice.
Add a little Parmesan on top.
The mozzarella provides the classic stretchy pizza texture while Parmesan gives the toast a richer, savory finish.
4. Add the toppings
Arrange the pepperoni, bell pepper, onion, and any other toppings over the cheese.
For large toppings, cut everything fairly small so the toast remains easy to eat.
5. Season
Sprinkle each slice with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and oregano.
Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like heat.
A very light spray of olive oil over the toppings can help them brown beautifully.
Air-Fry
6. Cook the pizza toast
Carefully place the prepared slices in the air-fryer basket.
Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 4–6 minutes.
The pizza toast is ready when:
- The cheese is completely melted.
- The edges of the bread are crisp.
- The toppings are hot.
- The cheese has some golden-brown spots.
Keep an eye on it during the final minute because the cheese can brown quickly.
7. Rest briefly
Remove the toast from the air fryer and let it rest for 1–2 minutes.
Finish with fresh basil or parsley and another sprinkle of Parmesan.
Slice diagonally and serve hot.
Extra-Crispy Version
For very crisp pizza toast, brush the exposed edges of the bread lightly with olive oil or melted butter before cooking.
You can also air-fry the bread by itself for 2 minutes before adding the sauce and toppings.
This creates a sturdier base that stays crisp underneath the pizza toppings.
Garlic Butter Pizza Toast
Mix:
- 1 tbsp melted butter
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
- Pinch of salt
Brush it around the edges of the bread before adding the sauce.
The result tastes like a cross between garlic bread and pizza.
Pepperoni Pizza Toast
For a classic version, use:
- Pizza sauce
- Mozzarella
- Pepperoni
- Parmesan
- Oregano
- Italian seasoning
Place a few pepperoni slices under the cheese and a few on top. The ones on top will crisp around the edges while the ones underneath add extra flavor.
Chicken Alfredo Pizza Toast
Replace the pizza sauce with a thin layer of Alfredo sauce.
Top with:
- Cooked diced chicken
- Mozzarella
- Parmesan
- Spinach
- Garlic powder
- Italian seasoning
Air fry until the cheese is bubbling.
Spicy Pizza Toast
Add:
- Pepperoni
- Jalapeños
- Banana peppers
- Red pepper flakes
- Pepper Jack mixed with mozzarella
Finish with a drizzle of hot honey if you enjoy sweet-and-spicy flavors.
Margherita Pizza Toast
For a fresh version, use:
- Pizza sauce
- Fresh mozzarella
- Cherry tomato slices
- Fresh basil
- Italian seasoning
Add the fresh basil after cooking so it stays bright and fragrant.
Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Pizza Toast
Don’t overload it
Too many toppings make the toast difficult to cook evenly and can cause the cheese to slide off.
Use thick bread
Sourdough, Texas toast, French bread, or thick sandwich bread all work especially well.
Keep toppings small
Small pieces heat quickly and stay on the toast better.
Watch the cheese
Air fryers vary considerably. Your pizza toast may be ready a minute earlier or later than the suggested cooking time.
Cook in a single layer
Don’t stack or overlap the slices.
Air circulation is what gives the bread its crisp edges.
Serving Ideas
Serve the pizza toast with:
- Marinara sauce for dipping
- Ranch dressing
- Caesar salad
- Green salad
- Tomato soup
- Crispy potatoes
- Fresh fruit
For a quick snack, simply serve two slices with a small bowl of warm marinara for dipping.
Best combination: thick sourdough + garlic-seasoned pizza sauce + mozzarella + crispy pepperoni + Parmesan + oregano, air-fried until the cheese is bubbling and the edges are golden.
