Before Going to Sleep, Unplug These Kitchen Appliances to Reduce Fire Risk
There isn’t one particular kitchen appliance that must always be unplugged “at all costs” in every home. However, some portable appliances can pose a greater fire risk if they malfunction, are damaged, or are left operating unattended.
1. Toasters
A toaster can accumulate crumbs and food debris around its heating elements. A malfunction or trapped food can potentially create a fire hazard. It’s sensible to unplug a toaster when it isn’t being used, particularly before leaving home or going to bed.
2. Air Fryers
Air fryers contain heating elements that become very hot during operation. Don’t leave one running unattended or overnight, and inspect the cord and plug regularly for damage.
3. Electric Kettles
Most modern kettles automatically switch off when the water boils, but they should still be switched off and unplugged when finished if the manufacturer’s instructions recommend it.
4. Coffee Makers
Coffee makers contain heating components and may remain warm for extended periods. Use the automatic shut-off feature if available, and avoid leaving older or malfunctioning machines plugged in unnecessarily.
5. Countertop Ovens and Other Heating Appliances
Toaster ovens, hot plates, sandwich makers, and similar appliances should generally be switched off after use and unplugged when appropriate, especially if they don’t have an automatic shut-off function.
What About Refrigerators?
A refrigerator should not normally be unplugged overnight. It is designed to operate continuously, and disconnecting it can allow food to reach unsafe temperatures.
Basic Kitchen Fire Safety
- Don’t operate damaged appliances or frayed cords.
- Keep appliances away from water and heat sources.
- Don’t overload electrical outlets or extension cords.
- Keep flammable materials away from heating appliances.
- Clean crumbs and grease buildup regularly.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each appliance.
Bottom line: Rather than focusing on one “dangerous” appliance, the safest habit is to switch off heating appliances after use and never leave them operating unattended while you sleep.
