A Natural Approach to Relieving Constipation
There isn’t one natural remedy that works for everyone, but prunes, fiber, adequate fluids, and regular movement are among the simplest approaches for mild constipation.
Try Prunes
Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, which can help draw water into the bowel and make stools easier to pass. Start with a small serving because too many may cause gas or diarrhea.
Increase Fiber Gradually
Good choices include:
-
Oatmeal and whole grains
-
Pears, apples, berries, and other fruits
-
Vegetables
-
Beans and lentils
-
Chia or flaxseed
-
Nuts and seeds
Increase fiber gradually and drink enough fluid. A sudden large increase can cause bloating.
Stay Hydrated and Active
Drink fluids regularly and try to include daily walking or other moderate activity. Establishing a regular bathroom routine and responding promptly to the urge to go can also help.
When to Get Medical Advice
Don’t rely on home remedies if constipation is accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent or severe abdominal pain, vomiting, significant abdominal swelling, or a sudden change in bowel habits.
Severe abdominal pain with vomiting and an inability to pass stool or gas requires urgent medical attention.
Bottom line: For ordinary constipation, a combination of prunes + gradually increased fiber + adequate fluids + regular movement is a reasonable place to start. Persistent or recurring constipation should be evaluated to determine the underlying cause.
