A Natural Way to Relieve Constipation

For occasional constipation, one of the simplest evidence-based approaches is to increase fiber gradually and drink enough fluid.

Try this

  • Prunes or prune juice: Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol that can help draw water into the bowel. A small serving can be a useful first step.

  • More fiber: Fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, oats, and whole grains can help. Increase fiber gradually to avoid excessive gas and bloating.

  • Adequate fluids: Drink regularly throughout the day, unless you’ve been told to restrict fluids because of a medical condition.

  • Movement: Walking and regular physical activity can stimulate bowel function.

  • Don’t ignore the urge: Give yourself enough time to use the bathroom and avoid routinely holding stool.

If you need something more predictable

An osmotic laxative such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) is commonly used for constipation and has good evidence for effectiveness. Follow the package directions or ask a pharmacist about whether it’s appropriate for you.

🚨 When constipation needs medical attention

Contact a healthcare professional if constipation is persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or a significant change in bowel habits.

Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, or inability to pass stool and gas can require urgent evaluation.

Bottom line: Prunes, fiber, adequate fluids, and regular movement are reasonable natural measures for ordinary constipation. There isn’t one “miracle” remedy that works for everyone.
