Nana’s Thick Toenail Trick: An Old-Fashioned Way to Improve Their Appearance

Thick, rough-looking toenails can be frustrating, especially when they become difficult to trim or make your feet look less neat. My nana swears by a simple old-fashioned routine that focuses on softening and gently smoothing the nails rather than trying to cut through them when they are dry and hard.

What’s the Trick Called?

The Warm-Soak & Gentle-Filing Method

The idea is simple: soften the toenails first, then carefully smooth them afterward.

How It Works

  1. Soak your feet: Place your feet in comfortably warm water for about 10–15 minutes. This helps soften the nails and surrounding skin.

  2. Dry thoroughly: Pat your feet completely dry, especially between the toes.

  3. Trim carefully: If the nails are manageable, use clean toenail clippers and make small cuts rather than trying to remove a thick nail in one go. Avoid cutting deeply into the corners.

  4. Gently file: Use a clean nail file to smooth rough or uneven areas. Don’t aggressively thin the nail, as this can injure the nail bed.

  5. Moisturize: Apply a foot moisturizer to the surrounding skin to help keep it from becoming dry and cracked.

An Important Note

This routine can make thick toenails look neater and feel easier to manage, but it doesn’t necessarily treat the reason a toenail became thick. Thickened nails can have several causes, including fungal infections, repeated pressure or injury, psoriasis, or other nail conditions.

If a nail is yellow, crumbly, painful, separated from the nail bed, or becoming increasingly thick, it’s worth having it checked by a healthcare professional rather than relying only on a home remedy.

Nana’s Rule

Soften first. Trim gently. File carefully. Never force a thick nail.

That simple approach can help improve the appearance of thick toenails while reducing the chance of accidentally hurting yourself.
