🌶️ Green Chile Picadillo
A flavorful Mexican-style ground beef dish made with roasted green chiles, tomatoes, potatoes, and aromatic spices. It’s excellent with warm tortillas, rice, or beans.
Ingredients
-
500 g (1 lb) ground beef
-
2–3 roasted green chiles, chopped
-
2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
-
2 tomatoes, diced
-
½ onion, finely chopped
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
-
½ teaspoon ground cumin
-
½ teaspoon dried oregano
-
½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
-
¼ teaspoon black pepper
-
½ cup water or beef broth
-
Fresh cilantro, chopped
-
Optional: 1 jalapeño for extra heat
Instructions
-
Brown the beef: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 2–3 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
-
Add garlic and spices: Stir in the garlic, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 30 seconds.
-
Cook the potatoes: Add the diced potatoes and stir well. Cook for 5 minutes.
-
Add tomatoes and chiles: Stir in the tomatoes and chopped green chiles.
-
Simmer: Pour in the water or broth. Cover and simmer for about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender and most of the liquid has reduced.
-
Finish: Taste and adjust the salt and chile. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro.
🍽️ How to Serve It
Serve hot with warm flour or corn tortillas, Mexican rice, refried beans, or a simple salad. A little avocado or fresh lime on top is also delicious.
Easy Variation
For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken for the beef. You can also add peas, carrots, or zucchini for extra vegetables.
