🍞 Easiest & Cheapest Homemade Bread
This is a simple, no-mixer bread recipe made with basic ingredients: flour, yeast, water, salt, sugar, and a little oil. It’s soft inside, lightly crisp outside, and much cheaper than store-bought bread.
Ingredients
-
3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
-
1 cup (240 ml) warm water
-
2¼ teaspoons (1 packet / 7 g) active dry yeast
-
1 tablespoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
1. Activate the yeast
Pour the warm water into a large bowl.
Add the sugar and yeast and stir gently.
Let it sit for 5–10 minutes.
The mixture should become slightly foamy. If nothing happens, your yeast may be inactive or the water may have been too hot or too cold.
2. Make the dough
Add the flour, salt, and vegetable oil.
Mix with a wooden spoon until the ingredients come together into a rough dough.
If the dough is very sticky, add flour 1 tablespoon at a time.
If it’s very dry or crumbly, add a little water, 1 tablespoon at a time.
You want a soft dough that is slightly tacky but not excessively sticky.
3. Knead
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
Knead for about 8–10 minutes.
Push the dough away with the heel of your hand, fold it back, turn it, and repeat.
You can also knead it directly in the bowl if you don’t want to dirty your counter.
The dough should become smoother and elastic.
4. Let it rise
Lightly oil the bowl and place the dough inside.
Turn it once so the surface gets a thin coating of oil.
Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
Place it somewhere warm and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until roughly doubled in size.
5. Shape the loaf
Punch the dough down gently to remove excess air.
Shape it into a loaf.
Place it in a greased 9 × 5-inch loaf pan.
Cover and let it rise again for 30–45 minutes.
It should look noticeably puffy.
6. Bake
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the bread for 30–35 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
The loaf can be tempting to cut into it immediately, but letting it cool helps the inside finish should sound hollow when you tap the top.
7. Cool
Remove the bread from the pan and place it on a wire rack.
Let it cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
It can be tempting to cut into it immediately, but letting it cool helps the inside finish setting and prevents gummy slices.
💰 Cheapest Version
If you’re trying to keep the cost as low as possible, you can simplify it further:
-
3 cups flour
-
1 cup warm water
-
2¼ teaspoons yeast
-
1 tablespoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon salt
Skip the oil. The bread will still work—it just won’t be quite as soft and tender.
🥖 No Loaf Pan?
No problem.
Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a greased baking sheet.
Let it rise, then bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 30–35 minutes.
You’ll get a rustic round loaf instead of sandwich-style bread.
Helpful Tips
-
The water should feel warm, not hot, roughly 100–110°F (38–43°C).
-
Don’t add too much flour. A slightly soft dough makes softer bread.
-
If your kitchen is cold, let the dough rise in a switched-off oven with the oven light on.
-
Store the cooled bread in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for 2–3 days.
-
You can slice and freeze the bread for longer storage.
For the softest cheap homemade bread: don’t skip the second rise, and don’t overbake it. Those two steps make the biggest difference.
