Prep time: 20 minutes
Chilling time: 30–60 minutes
Total time: About 1 hour
Ingredients
For the crab salad
- 1 lb (450 g) cooked crab meat, picked over for shells
- ½ cup celery, finely diced
- ¼ cup red onion, finely minced
- ¼ cup red bell pepper, finely diced
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 tbsp green onions, thinly sliced
- 1–2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped (optional)
For the creamy dressing
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp paprika
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Salt, to taste
- 1–2 tsp hot sauce (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the crab
Place the crab meat in a large bowl.
Carefully check through the crab with your fingers and remove any remaining pieces of shell or cartilage.
If you’re using lump crab meat, gently separate large pieces with your fingers rather than chopping it too finely.
Keeping some larger pieces gives the salad a much better texture.
2. Prepare the vegetables
Finely dice the celery, red onion, and bell pepper.
Try to keep the pieces fairly small so they blend nicely with the crab instead of overpowering it.
Slice the green onions and chop the parsley and dill.
3. Make the creamy dressing
In a separate bowl, whisk together:
- Mayonnaise
- Sour cream or Greek yogurt
- Lemon juice
- Dijon mustard
- Old Bay
- Garlic powder
- Paprika
- Black pepper
Add a little salt if needed.
If you like a little heat, add 1–2 teaspoons of hot sauce.
Whisk until the dressing is smooth and creamy.
4. Combine the vegetables and crab
Add the celery, red onion, bell pepper, green onions, parsley, and dill to the crab.
Gently toss everything together.
Be careful not to break up the crab too much.
5. Add the dressing
Pour the dressing over the crab mixture.
Using a spatula, gently fold everything together until the crab and vegetables are evenly coated.
Don’t stir aggressively—the goal is to keep the crab pieces intact.
6. Taste and adjust
Taste the salad.
You may want to add:
- More lemon juice for brightness
- More Old Bay for seasoning
- A little extra mayonnaise for creaminess
- More black pepper for a sharper flavor
- Hot sauce for heat
If it tastes a little flat, a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice can make a big difference.
7. Chill
Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
An hour is even better because the flavors have time to blend.
🥪 How to Serve
Crab Salad Sandwich
Spoon the chilled crab salad onto:
- Croissants
- Brioche
- Toasted sourdough
- Hamburger buns
- Lettuce leaves for a lighter option
Add lettuce, tomato, and a little extra lemon.
🥬 Lettuce Cups
For a lighter meal, spoon the crab salad into crisp romaine, butter lettuce, or iceberg leaves.

🥑 Crab & Avocado

The creamy avocado works beautifully with the bright lemony crab mixture.
🍅 Appetizer
Serve small portions on crackers or toasted baguette slices.
For an elegant presentation, garnish with fresh dill and a tiny piece of lemon.
⭐ Tips for the Best Crab Salad
Use good-quality crab. The crab is the star of this recipe, so lump or jumbo lump crab gives the best texture.
Don’t drown the crab in dressing. Add the dressing gradually. You want the crab coated and creamy, not swimming in mayonnaise.
Chill before serving. Even 30 minutes makes the flavors noticeably better.
Use fresh lemon juice. It provides a much brighter flavor than bottled lemon juice.
Keep the crab chunky. Large pieces make the salad feel much more substantial.
🌶️ Easy Variations
Spicy Crab Salad
Add:
- 1–2 tsp hot sauce
- ¼ tsp cayenne
- Finely diced jalapeño
Garlic Herb Crab Salad
Add extra fresh parsley, dill, and a small amount of minced garlic.
Southern-Style
Add a little extra Old Bay, chopped green onion, and a dash of hot sauce.
Avocado Crab Salad
Replace about half of the mayonnaise with mashed avocado for a creamy, fresh variation.
🧊 Storage
Keep the crab salad refrigerated at all times.
Store it in a covered airtight container and use it within 3–4 days.
Don’t leave seafood salad at room temperature for extended periods, especially in warm weather.
🍋 Final touch
Just before serving, add a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of chopped parsley or dill. It wakes up the creamy dressing and makes the crab flavor really shine.
