The Kitchen Appliance You Should Unplug Before Bed
There isn’t one kitchen appliance that everyone must unplug “at all costs.” However, several countertop appliances can create a fire risk if they malfunction, overheat, or have damaged cords.
1. Toasters and Toaster Ovens
A toaster is a common appliance worth unplugging after use, particularly before leaving home or going to sleep. Crumbs and food particles can accumulate inside, and an electrical fault could potentially cause overheating.
2. Coffee Makers and Other Heating Appliances
Appliances that generate heat, such as coffee makers, electric kettles, and countertop grills, are also sensible to switch off and unplug when they aren’t designed to remain continuously powered.
3. Check the Cord and Plug
A damaged, frayed, loose, or unusually hot cord or plug deserves attention. Stop using the appliance and have it repaired or replaced rather than continuing to use it.
4. Keep Appliances Away From Flammable Materials
Don’t place operating appliances beneath cabinets or next to paper towels, curtains, packaging, or other materials that can catch fire.
The Simple Nighttime Habit
Before going to bed, switch off countertop heating appliances and unplug those that don’t need to remain powered. Make sure your stove and oven are off as well.
Bottom line: The safest advice isn’t about one “dangerous” appliance. It’s about eliminating unnecessary sources of heat and electricity before sleeping and following the manufacturer’s instructions for appliances that are designed to remain plugged in.
