Baking Soda for Grease: A Simple Natural Cleaning Method
Baking soda can help absorb grease and loosen oily residue, but it isn’t the only way to remove grease, and it won’t work equally well on every surface.
🧂 The Basic Baking-Soda Paste
Ingredients
-
½ cup baking soda
-
2–3 tablespoons warm water
-
A small amount of dishwashing liquid for heavy grease
How to Prepare It
-
Put the baking soda in a small bowl.
-
Add warm water gradually.
-
Mix until you have a thick, spreadable paste.
-
For stubborn grease, add a few drops of dish soap.
-
Apply a thin layer to the greasy area.
-
Leave it for 10–15 minutes.
-
Gently scrub with a soft sponge or cloth.
-
Wipe away the residue with clean water and dry the surface.
Where It Can Help
-
Stovetops: Use a soft sponge and avoid abrasive scrubbing on delicate finishes.
-
Oven surfaces: Baking soda paste can loosen baked-on grease; stubborn buildup may require a commercial oven cleaner designed for the appliance.
-
Kitchen cabinets: Test a hidden area first, especially on painted or wood finishes.
-
Pans and cookware: Useful for greasy residue, but follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
-
Microwave interiors: Apply carefully to greasy areas and wipe thoroughly afterward.
⚠️ Important
Don’t assume baking soda is safe for every surface. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on polished stone, delicate finishes, aluminum, or easily scratched surfaces, and test an inconspicuous spot first.
And never mix baking soda with bleach or other household cleaning chemicals. For ordinary kitchen grease, dish soap is often more effective than baking soda alone because it breaks up oils rather than merely absorbing them.
