Ants Can’t Stand It! A Simple Natural Way to Help Keep Ants Away
If ants keep appearing around your kitchen, windows, doors, or other parts of the house, you may be tempted to reach for strong chemical sprays. A simpler approach is to remove the things attracting them and use scents that may discourage ants from traveling through the area.
Try White Vinegar and Water
A common household method is a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. Put the mixture into a spray bottle and lightly spray areas where ants are frequently seen, such as along countertops, windowsills, door frames, and other entry points.
The strong vinegar smell can interfere with the scent trails ants use to navigate, which may make treated areas less attractive to them. However, vinegar does not necessarily eliminate an entire colony, so it works best as part of a broader prevention routine.
How to Use It
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
- Clean away crumbs, sugar, grease, and food residue first.
- Spray the mixture along ant trails and likely entry points.
- Wipe the area after allowing it to sit briefly.
- Repeat as needed, particularly after cleaning or when ants return.
The Most Important Step: Remove What Attracts Them
Ants are usually searching for food, water, or shelter. Keep counters and floors free from food particles, store sweet foods in sealed containers, clean spills promptly, and empty garbage regularly.
Also check around windows, doors, pipes, and small cracks for possible entry points. Sealing these gaps can make it much harder for ants to return.
A Small but Important Warning
Don’t use vinegar on surfaces that can be damaged by acids, such as marble, natural stone, or some delicate finishes. And never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals, because dangerous fumes can result.
For a persistent infestation, especially if ants are appearing throughout the house despite cleaning and sealing, professional pest control may be more effective than household remedies.
