Detail

If you’re seeing two unexplained piles of small dark material, don’t assume it’s dirt or food debris. Several household pests can leave droppings or debris that look surprisingly similar.

What It Could Be

1. Mouse droppings
Usually small, dark, smooth pellets resembling tiny grains of rice, often with pointed ends. Mice may leave multiple droppings along walls, behind furniture, or in drawers. Emerald Pest Control+1

2. Cockroach droppings
These can look like black pepper, coffee grounds, tiny specks, or small pellets. They are often concentrated around hiding places such as cracks, furniture edges, and wall or baseboard areas. Pest Or Not+1

3. Termite or carpenter-ant debris
If the piles look more like fine sawdust or tiny uniform pellets, check nearby wooden furniture, window frames, or other wood for holes or damage. NoToPests

4. Other possibilities
Seeds, food particles, dirt, or debris from another insect can sometimes look similar, so a photo and size comparison are important before identifying it.

What to Do Now

  • Don’t touch the material with bare hands.

  • Take a clear photograph with a coin or ruler beside it for scale. This is one of the most useful clues for identification. NoToPests

  • Look around the room for additional signs: small holes, gnaw marks, insects, shed skins, egg cases, or nesting material.

  • If you suspect rodent droppings, don’t sweep or vacuum them while dry. Dampen them with an appropriate disinfectant and wipe them up while wearing gloves. Emerald Pest Control

  • Check under the bed, behind furniture, inside closets, and along baseboards.

Most Important

If you upload a photo of the two piles, preferably with a coin or ruler next to them, I can help you narrow down whether they look more like mouse droppings, cockroach droppings, termite debris, or something harmless.
