The Quick Trick for Removing Dirt Between Grout Lines With One Swipe
Dark, dirty grout can make an otherwise clean floor or bathroom look neglected. Fortunately, you don’t always need a specialized grout cleaner. A simple cleaning paste can help loosen everyday grime and make grout easier to scrub.
What You Need
- ½ cup baking soda
- A small amount of water
- 1–2 drops of mild dish soap
- An old toothbrush or small grout brush
- Clean water
- A microfiber cloth
How to Clean the Grout
1. Make a thick paste.
Mix the baking soda with a little water until it forms a spreadable paste. Add a couple of drops of dish soap and mix well.
2. Apply it to the grout.
Spread a thin layer directly along the dirty grout lines. Don’t cover the entire floor unnecessarily.
3. Let it sit briefly.
Leave the paste for about 5–10 minutes so it has time to loosen surface grime.
4. Scrub the grout.
Use an old toothbrush or grout brush and work along the grout lines. For light surface dirt, a few passes may be enough; heavily soiled grout may require more work.
5. Wipe everything clean.
Use a damp microfiber cloth to remove the loosened dirt and baking-soda residue. Rinse the cloth frequently.
6. Dry the area.
Wipe the grout with a clean, dry cloth and allow the surface to dry completely.
For Very Dark Grout
If the black appearance is actually mold or mildew, especially in a persistently damp bathroom, ordinary dirt-cleaning methods may not be enough. Improve ventilation, reduce moisture, and use a suitable mold/mildew cleaner according to its label.
Important Safety Tip
Don’t mix household cleaners together. In particular, never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or acidic cleaners, because dangerous fumes can be produced. Also test any cleaning mixture on a small, inconspicuous area first, especially with colored or delicate grout.
This method can make dirty grout look noticeably cleaner, but severely stained or permanently discolored grout may require a dedicated grout cleaner or professional treatment.
