How to Prevent and Reduce Tartar Buildup at Home

Tartar, also called dental calculus, forms when plaque hardens on the teeth. Once tartar has firmly developed, it generally cannot be safely removed with ordinary brushing at home. Trying to scrape it away with sharp tools can damage the enamel or gums.

1. Brush Twice a Day

Brush for about two minutes each time using fluoride toothpaste. Pay attention to the gumline, where plaque commonly collects.

2. Clean Between Your Teeth

Floss or use an appropriate interdental cleaner once a day. Brushing alone cannot effectively clean the spaces between teeth, where plaque can accumulate and eventually harden.

3. Consider an Electric Toothbrush

A properly used electric toothbrush can help remove plaque effectively. The important part is consistent, gentle cleaning rather than pressing hard against the teeth.

4. Limit Frequent Sugary Snacks and Drinks

Frequent exposure to sugar can encourage plaque bacteria and increase the risk of tooth decay. Water between meals is a simple choice for keeping the mouth cleaner.

5. Don’t Try to Scrape Tartar Yourself

Dental scalers, pins, knives, and other sharp objects can cut the gums, scratch tooth surfaces, or cause infection. Home remedies such as lemon juice or vinegar can also be too acidic and may damage enamel.

6. Get Professional Cleaning When Tartar Has Formed

A dentist or dental hygienist can safely remove hardened tartar using professional instruments. Regular dental examinations can also identify gum disease or cavities before they become more serious.

Bottom line: You can prevent and reduce the plaque that eventually becomes tartar, but established tartar is best removed professionally. Good brushing, cleaning between the teeth, and regular dental care are safer than trying to scrape deposits off yourself.
