5 Signs of a Mini Stroke in Older Adults
A “mini stroke” is commonly called a transient ischemic attack (TIA). It happens when blood flow to part of the brain is temporarily disrupted. The symptoms can disappear quickly, but a TIA is a serious warning sign and should never be ignored.
1. Sudden Weakness or Numbness
One side of the face, arm, or leg may suddenly become weak or numb. A person may notice that one arm feels unusually heavy or that their smile becomes uneven.
2. Sudden Trouble Speaking
Speech may suddenly become slurred, unclear, or difficult to produce. The person may also have trouble understanding what others are saying.
3. Sudden Vision Changes
A TIA can cause sudden blurred or double vision or temporary loss of vision in one or both eyes. Even if eyesight returns to normal, the episode needs urgent medical assessment.
4. Sudden Dizziness or Loss of Balance
Unexpected dizziness, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, or trouble maintaining balance can be a warning sign, particularly when it begins suddenly.
5. Sudden Severe Headache or Confusion
A sudden severe headache without a known cause, confusion, or difficulty understanding information can occur with a TIA or stroke.
Don’t Wait for Symptoms to Disappear
TIA symptoms can last only minutes and then completely disappear. That does not mean the danger has passed. Because TIA and stroke symptoms can look alike, it is not possible to reliably determine at home whether an episode is a TIA or an actual stroke. Emergency medical evaluation is needed.
