Detail

This hearty Philly cheesesteak stuffed garlic bread combines thinly sliced beef, sautéed onions and peppers, melted cheese, and buttery garlic bread. It’s perfect for a filling lunch, dinner, or party appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf French bread or Italian bread

  • 1 lb (450 g) thinly sliced steak

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced, optional

  • 1½ cups shredded provolone or mozzarella

  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Cut the loaf lengthwise, but don’t cut completely through the bottom.

  3. Mix the softened butter, garlic, and parsley. Set aside.

  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  5. Add the onions, bell pepper, and mushrooms. Cook for 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly browned.

  6. Add the thinly sliced steak and cook until browned and cooked through.

  7. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

  8. Spread the garlic butter generously over the inside of the bread.

  9. Fill the loaf with the hot steak and vegetable mixture.

  10. Cover generously with shredded provolone or mozzarella.

  11. Wrap loosely in foil and bake for 10 minutes.

  12. Open the foil and bake for another 5–8 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the bread is crisp around the edges.

  13. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.

Extra Flavor

For a more classic cheesesteak flavor, use ribeye sliced very thinly. Provolone gives a traditional savory flavor, while mozzarella creates an especially stretchy cheese topping.

Serving Idea

Cut into thick slices and serve with French fries, a simple green salad, or pickles. A little ketchup or hot pepper relish on the side makes a great finishing touch.
