My Neighbor Taught Me This Trick to Clean Green Algae Off Siding With Almost No Effort
Green algae can make siding look dirty and neglected, especially in damp, shaded areas. Fortunately, you usually don’t need aggressive scrubbing to remove it. A simple cleaning solution and a little patience can do much of the work.
What You’ll Need
- A bucket of warm water
- Mild dish soap
- A soft-bristle brush or long-handled siding brush
- A garden hose
- Gloves and eye protection
How It Works
1. Rinse the siding first
Use a garden hose to remove loose dirt and debris. Work from the top downward so dirty water doesn’t run over areas you have already cleaned.
2. Make a mild cleaning solution
Add a small amount of dish soap to a bucket of warm water. The goal is to loosen the algae and grime without using a harsh mixture that could damage the siding or surrounding plants.
3. Apply it to the green areas
Dip the brush into the solution and gently spread it over the algae-covered siding. Let the solution sit for several minutes so it has time to loosen the buildup.
4. Give stubborn spots a gentle scrub
You shouldn’t need heavy pressure. Use a soft brush and work in small sections until the green residue begins to lift.
5. Rinse thoroughly
Hose the siding from top to bottom until all soap and loosened algae are gone.
Keep It From Coming Back
Algae tends to return where siding stays damp and shaded. Trim vegetation that blocks sunlight and airflow, keep gutters functioning properly, and address leaks or areas where water continually splashes onto the siding.
Important: Avoid mixing household cleaners, especially bleach with ammonia or acidic products. If you use a commercial algae remover, follow its label directions and protect nearby plants.
