5 Drinks That May Help Manage Uric Acid
If your big toe feels hot, swollen, and extremely painful, gout could be one possible cause. No drink can instantly “eliminate” uric acid, but some beverages may support hydration and healthy uric-acid levels.
1. Water
The simplest choice. Staying well hydrated helps your kidneys remove uric acid through urine.
2. Low-Fat Milk
Low-fat dairy may help lower uric acid levels and may be a useful choice for people prone to gout.
3. Tart Cherry Juice
Some research suggests tart cherries may help reduce inflammation and may be beneficial for people with gout. Choose unsweetened juice when possible.
4. Coffee
Regular coffee consumption has been associated with lower uric acid levels in some studies. Avoid adding excessive sugar.
5. Lemon Water
Lemon water is a good way to increase fluid intake. However, claims that it directly “flushes out” uric acid are not well established.
Important
If you have a sudden, intensely painful, red, or swollen big toe, don’t rely only on drinks. Gout can require proper diagnosis and treatment. Avoid excessive alcohol and sugary drinks, which can worsen gout risk.
