If You Usually Sleep on Your Right Side, There’s Something Important You Should Know

Sleeping on your right side is not inherently unhealthy. For many people, side sleeping is comfortable and can be a good way to sleep. However, your sleeping position can affect reflux, breathing, pressure on joints, and comfort depending on your individual health.

1. It May Affect Acid Reflux

For people who experience heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux, sleeping on the right side can sometimes make symptoms worse.

Research generally suggests that left-side sleeping may reduce nighttime reflux for some people because of the position of the stomach relative to the esophagus.

If you regularly wake with heartburn, sour taste, or regurgitation, changing to your left side may be worth trying.

2. It Can Be Comfortable for Breathing

Side sleeping can help keep the upper airway more open compared with sleeping flat on the back for some people.

This can be particularly relevant for people who snore or have obstructive sleep apnea, although sleep position alone isn’t a treatment for sleep apnea.

3. Your Shoulder Can Take Extra Pressure

If you always sleep on the same side, the shoulder underneath you carries prolonged pressure.

If you wake with shoulder pain, arm numbness, or stiffness, try changing sides periodically or adjusting your pillow and sleeping position.

4. Your Spine Position Matters

Side sleeping can be comfortable for the back when your spine remains relatively neutral.

A pillow that keeps your head aligned with your spine—and, for some people, a pillow between the knees—can reduce unnecessary twisting of the hips and lower back.

5. Pregnancy Is Different

During pregnancy, sleep position can become more important, particularly later in pregnancy. People are generally advised to avoid going to sleep flat on their back for prolonged periods later in pregnancy, and side sleeping is commonly recommended.

Pregnant individuals should follow their own clinician’s advice regarding sleep position.

6. There Is No Rule That Right-Side Sleeping Damages Your Heart

A common internet claim says that sleeping on the right side is dangerous because it “puts pressure on the heart.”

For most healthy people, there is no reason to avoid sleeping on the right side simply because of the heart. Your heart is protected within the chest, and people naturally change positions during sleep.

People with specific heart or lung conditions should follow their clinician’s individualized advice.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position?

There isn’t one position that is best for everyone.

  • Right side: perfectly reasonable for many people.
  • Left side: may be preferable if nighttime acid reflux is a problem.
  • Either side: can be comfortable with appropriate pillow support.
  • Back: can be comfortable for some people but may worsen snoring or sleep apnea.
  • Stomach: may be comfortable for some but can put more strain on the neck and back.

Bottom Line

If you sleep on your right side and sleep comfortably, breathe normally, and wake feeling rested, there’s usually no reason to change simply because of your sleeping position. If you have reflux, shoulder pain, significant snoring, or another specific problem, adjusting your position may help.
