If You Think You’re Having a Heart Attack, Do This Immediately
There is no 10-second trick that can stop a heart attack. The safest action is to get emergency medical help as quickly as possible.
1. Call Emergency Services
If you have chest pressure or pain, especially with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw, call your local emergency number immediately.
2. Sit Down and Stay Calm
Stop what you’re doing and sit or lie somewhere safe. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.
3. Unlock the Door
If you’re alone, unlock your door so emergency responders can reach you quickly.
4. Follow Emergency Medical Advice
If you have been prescribed nitroglycerin for chest pain, use it exactly as your doctor instructed.
5. Ask About Aspirin
If emergency services advise it, and you are not allergic to aspirin and have not been told to avoid it, they may recommend chewing aspirin while waiting for help. Don’t delay the emergency call to take it.
Important
If someone becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, call emergency services and begin CPR. Use an AED if one is available.
Don’t rely on coughing, drinking water, or other “heart attack hacks.” Getting emergency treatment quickly can save a life.
