- Œ cup (25 g) shredded mozzarella
- 1Â egg, beaten
- 1 tsp water
Optional topping
- Sesame seeds
- Everything bagel seasoning
- Grated Parmesan
- Pinch of chili flakes
đ©âđł Instructions
1. Prepare the beef
Heat a skillet over medium heat.
Add the ground beef and cook for about 4â5 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
Add the diced onion and cook for another 2â3 minutes, until the onion softens.
Add the garlic, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
Cook for another 30 seconds.
2. Add tomato paste
Stir in the tomato paste and 1 tablespoon of water.
Cook for 1â2 minutes, stirring until the beef is nicely coated.
The mixture should be fairly dry.
Important:Â Let the beef cool before putting it onto the puff pastry. Hot filling can melt the pastry butter and make the twists difficult to handle.
Stir in the fresh parsley and set aside.
đ„ Prepare the Puff Pastry
3. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
4. Roll out the pastry
Lightly flour your work surface.
Unfold the thawed puff pastry and gently roll it into a rectangle, approximately 10 à 12 inches.
Don’t roll it too thin.
5. Add the filling
Spread the cooled beef mixture evenly over half of the pastry.
Sprinkle the cheddar and mozzarella over the beef.
Fold the empty half of the pastry over the filling, creating a sandwich-like rectangle.
Gently press down to compact the layers.
6. Cut into strips
Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the filled pastry into approximately 12â16 strips, each about Ÿ inch wide.
đ„š Twist the Pastry
7. Twist each strip
Pick up one strip at a time.
Gently twist it several times to create a spiral.
Don’t twist too aggressively or the pastry may tear.
Place each twist on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them.
If the pastry becomes soft while you’re working, place the tray in the refrigerator for 10â15 minutes.
8. Make the egg wash
Whisk the egg with 1 teaspoon of water.
Brush the tops of the pastry twists lightly with the egg wash.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds, Parmesan, or everything seasoning if desired.
đ„ Bake
9. Bake until golden
Bake for approximately 18â22 minutes, or until the pastry is:
- Deep golden brown
- Puffy
- Crisp
- Fully cooked through
Keep an eye on them during the final few minutes because puff pastry can brown quickly.
10. Cool briefly
Let the twists cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving.
The cheese will be extremely hot straight from the oven.
â Tips for Perfect Puff Pastry Twists
Keep the pastry cold. Cold puff pastry gives you the flakiest layers.
Cool the beef completely. Warm filling can soften the pastry and prevent it from puffing properly.
Don’t overfill. Too much beef or cheese can cause the twists to split open.
Don’t skip the egg wash. It gives the pastry that beautiful glossy golden finish.
Use freshly grated cheese if possible. It melts more smoothly than many pre-shredded cheeses.
đ¶ïž Delicious Variations
Spicy Beef & Cheese
Add œ tsp chili flakes or a finely diced jalapeño to the beef.

Philly Cheesesteak

đ„Ł Serving Ideas
Serve these warm with:
- Marinara sauce
- Garlic aioli
- Ranch dressing
- Spicy ketchup
- Mustard
- Cheese dipping sauce
They’re especially good as a party appetizer because they’re easy to pick up and eat.
đ§ Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For the best texture, reheat them in a 375°F (190°C) oven or air fryer for 4â7 minutes rather than microwaving them. This brings the crispiness back.
You can also assemble the uncooked twists, refrigerate them for several hours, and bake them just before serving.
