“Add It to Your Cream” — Be Careful With DIY Blemish Remedies
Claims that adding a kitchen ingredient to your face cream will make blemishes disappear are usually overstated. Some homemade mixtures can actually irritate the skin and make dark marks more noticeable.
Safer ways to improve blemishes
-
For acne: Ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid have much better evidence than homemade mixtures.
-
For dark spots left after acne: Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen is essential. Azelaic acid or a retinoid may also help gradually fade pigmentation.
-
For dry or sensitive skin: Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer rather than mixing multiple ingredients into it.
Avoid common DIY additions
Don’t routinely mix lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste, hydrogen peroxide, or undiluted essential oils into facial creams. They can cause irritation, burns, allergic reactions, or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
If a blemish is new, rapidly changing, painful, bleeding, or doesn’t heal, it shouldn’t be assumed to be ordinary acne or pigmentation.
Bottom line: There isn’t a proven ingredient you can simply add to any cream that will permanently erase facial blemishes. A targeted skincare ingredient matched to the type of blemish is much safer and more effective.
