Orange Fluff Salad

This Orange Fluff Salad is a creamy, fluffy, and wonderfully nostalgic dessert salad made with orange gelatin, whipped topping, mandarin oranges, and marshmallows. It takes just minutes to mix together and is perfect for holidays, potlucks, family gatherings, or an easy make-ahead dessert.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) orange gelatin mix
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water
  • ½ cup (120 ml) cold water
  • 1 package (8 oz / 225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 container (8 oz / 225 g) whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) mandarin oranges, drained
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • ½ cup shredded sweetened coconut, optional

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the gelatin.
Place the orange gelatin powder in a large mixing bowl. Pour in the boiling water and whisk for about 1–2 minutes, until completely dissolved.
  2. Add cold water.
    Stir in the cold water.
  3. Add the cream cheese.
Let the gelatin mixture cool for a few minutes, then add the softened cream cheese.

Beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. A few small lumps are okay if the mixture is still warm.

  4. Fold in the whipped topping.
Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  5. Add the fruit and marshmallows.
Carefully fold in the drained mandarin oranges and mini marshmallows.

Add the shredded coconut if using.

  6. Chill.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably 3–4 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set.
  7. Serve.
Give the fluff a gentle stir before serving. Garnish with a few mandarin orange segments, whipped topping, or a sprinkle of coconut.

Tips for the Best Orange Fluff

  • Drain the oranges extremely well so excess liquid doesn’t make the salad watery.
  • Let the cream cheese soften completely for a smoother mixture.
  • Don’t vigorously stir the whipped topping—fold it gently to preserve the fluffy texture.
  • Chill the dessert thoroughly before serving.
  • For the best marshmallow texture, serve within a day or two.

Easy Variations

Pineapple Orange Fluff:
Add 1 cup well-drained crushed pineapple.

Orange Creamsicle Fluff:
Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and ½ teaspoon orange zest.

Coconut Orange Fluff:
Add ¾ cup shredded coconut and garnish with toasted coconut.

Cheesecake Orange Fluff:
Replace the cream cheese with softened cheesecake-flavored cream cheese and add a handful of crushed graham crackers.

Extra Fruity:
Add diced strawberries, peaches, or additional mandarin oranges.

Make-Ahead

Orange fluff is an excellent make-ahead dessert. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance, cover tightly, and refrigerate.

If adding crunchy toppings such as cookies or nuts, wait until just before serving so they don’t become soggy.

Storage

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Because it contains whipped topping, cream cheese, and fruit, keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.

Makes

8–10 servings

For a pretty presentation, spoon the chilled Orange Fluff into individual dessert cups and top each serving with a mandarin orange segment and a small dollop of whipped topping.
