Homemade Drop Biscuits
Detail
These easy homemade drop biscuits are soft and tender inside with lightly golden edges. No rolling or cutting is needed—the dough is simply scooped onto a baking sheet.
Ingredients
-
2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
-
1 tablespoon baking powder
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon sugar, optional
-
½ cup (115 g) cold butter, cut into small pieces
-
¾ cup (180 ml) cold milk
-
1 tablespoon melted butter, for brushing
Method
-
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
-
Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until it resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Pour in the cold milk and gently stir just until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Don’t overmix.
-
Drop large spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each biscuit.
-
Brush the tops with melted butter.
-
Bake for 12–15 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
-
Brush with a little more butter while they’re hot, if desired.
Tips for Fluffy Biscuits
-
Keep the butter and milk cold.
-
Don’t knead the dough.
-
Don’t overmix after adding the milk.
-
For extra-tender biscuits, avoid packing the flour tightly when measuring.
