🍌 Make Bananas Last Longer With One Simple Kitchen Item
The “one kitchen item” is plastic wrap—used around the banana stems.
Bananas naturally produce ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening. Wrapping the stems can reduce how quickly ethylene escapes from the stem area and may slow ripening somewhat.
How to Do It
-
Separate the bananas into individual fruits, or keep the bunch together.
-
Tear off a small piece of plastic wrap.
-
Wrap it snugly around the stem/crown of each banana.
-
Store the bananas at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat.
-
Once they’re as ripe as you like, you can refrigerate them. The peel may turn brown, but the fruit inside can remain good for longer.
🍌 Does It Really Add 10 Days?
Not reliably. Claims that this method will always make bananas last exactly 10 days longer are exaggerated. Wrapping the stems can slow ripening, but the effect varies with temperature, banana maturity, and storage conditions.
An Even Better Tip
If you want to slow ripening, don’t store bananas next to other ripe fruits such as apples, pears, or avocados. Keep them in a relatively cool area away from sunlight.
And don’t refrigerate green, unripe bananas if you want them to ripen normally—the cold can interfere with the ripening process.
