How to Get Rid of “Inner Ear Crystals” and Reduce Vertigo
If by “inner ear crystals” you mean BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), the problem is usually tiny calcium-carbonate crystals that have moved into one of the semicircular canals. This can cause brief spinning sensations when you roll over in bed, lie down, sit up, or look up/down. University Hospital Southampton+1
The main treatment: the Epley maneuver
The Epley maneuver uses a sequence of head and body positions to move the crystals back to an area where they no longer trigger vertigo. It is often highly effective, sometimes after only one or two treatments. Mayo Clinic+1
However, the correct side and type of maneuver matter. Ideally, a doctor, ENT specialist, audiologist, or vestibular physical therapist should first confirm that you actually have BPPV and determine which ear is affected.
If you’ve already been diagnosed with right-sided BPPV, for example, a commonly used home sequence is:
-
Sit on the edge of your bed and turn your head 45° toward the right.
-
Quickly lie back, keeping your head turned; wait about 30–60 seconds or until the spinning settles.
-
Turn your head 90° toward the left without lifting it; wait again.
-
Roll onto your left side, turning your head so your face points toward the floor; wait.
-
Slowly sit up.
You may experience brief vertigo during the maneuver—that can happen as the crystals move. Have someone nearby the first few times and perform it somewhere you cannot fall. University Hospital Southampton+1
Don’t attempt a home maneuver without professional advice if you have significant neck or back problems, certain vascular conditions, or difficulty moving your head safely.
Afterward
You may feel slightly unsteady for a day or two. Don’t drive while you’re dizzy or unsteady. Mersey Care NHS+1
If the vertigo continues, repeatedly returns, or doesn’t behave like brief position-triggered BPPV, you should be evaluated because not all vertigo is caused by ear crystals.
🚨 Get urgent medical attention if
Vertigo is accompanied by new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe headache, double vision, fainting, inability to walk, chest pain, or sudden hearing loss. Those symptoms can indicate something other than BPPV and require urgent assessment.
Bottom line: You don’t need to “dissolve” or remove the crystals with medicine or supplements. When BPPV is the cause, a properly performed canalith-repositioning maneuver such as Epley is the established treatment. Mayo Clinic+1
