Why Daily Showers After 65 May Not Always Be Ideal
The idea that people over 65 shouldn’t shower every day is too absolute. Older skin often becomes thinner and drier with age, so how you shower can matter more than whether you shower daily.
1. Hot water can dry the skin
Long, hot showers can remove some of the skin’s natural oils, potentially worsening dryness, itching, and irritation.
2. Frequent washing can aggravate sensitive skin
Older adults may be more prone to dry or fragile skin. Using harsh soaps over the entire body every day can increase irritation.
3. Scrubbing isn’t necessary
Aggressive loofahs, brushes, and exfoliating products can damage the skin barrier. Gentle washing is usually sufficient.
4. Falls are a bigger concern
For older adults, the shower itself can present a slip-and-fall risk. Grab bars, nonslip surfaces, adequate lighting, and a shower chair when appropriate can improve safety.
5. Moisturizing afterward helps
Applying a fragrance-free moisturizer soon after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp helps trap moisture.
So How Often Should Someone Over 65 Shower?
There’s no universal schedule based solely on age. Some people may comfortably shower every day, while others may find that bathing every other day or less often prevents excessive dryness.
Personal hygiene still matters, particularly around areas prone to sweat, odor, and infection. The frequency can also change with activity level, climate, incontinence, medical conditions, and personal preference.
A Skin-Friendly Shower
-
Use warm rather than very hot water.
-
Keep showers relatively short.
-
Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
-
Focus cleanser on areas that actually need it rather than aggressively washing the entire body.
-
Pat rather than rub the skin dry.
-
Moisturize afterward.
Bottom line: After 65, daily showering isn’t inherently harmful. The main issue is that long, hot, harsh showers can worsen age-related dryness and increase fall risk. A gentle bathing routine tailored to the individual is usually the better approach.
