Orange Fluff Recipe
Orange Fluff is a light, creamy, sweet, and refreshing no-bake dessert made with orange gelatin, whipped topping, mandarin oranges, and fluffy marshmallows. It’s especially good for parties, potlucks, holidays, and summer gatherings.Serves: 8–10
Prep time: 15 minutes
Chilling time: 3–4 hours
Difficulty: Very easy
Ingredients
- 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) orange gelatin dessert mix
- 1 cup boiling water
- ½ cup cold water
- 1 package (8 oz / 225 g) cream cheese, softened
- 1 container (8 oz / 225 g) whipped topping, thawed
- 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) mandarin oranges, well drained
- 1½ cups mini marshmallows
- 1 cup crushed pineapple, well drained
- ½ cup sweetened shredded coconut, optional
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Orange Gelatin
Place the orange gelatin powder in a large mixing bowl.
Pour in 1 cup of boiling water.
Whisk continuously for about 1–2 minutes, until the gelatin completely dissolves.
There should be no visible granules remaining.
Add ½ cup cold water and stir.
Let the gelatin mixture cool for approximately 10–15 minutes.
You don’t want it completely set yet—it should simply be cool enough that it won’t melt the other ingredients.
Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese
Make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature.
Place it in a large bowl.
Beat with an electric mixer for approximately 1–2 minutes, until smooth and creamy.
Add:
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon orange zest, if using
Beat again until combined.
Important
Don’t use cold cream cheese straight from the refrigerator.
Cold cream cheese can leave small lumps throughout the fluff.
Step 3: Add the Orange Gelatin
Slowly pour the cooled orange gelatin mixture into the softened cream cheese while beating on low speed.
Once everything is incorporated, increase the speed slightly and beat until smooth.
The mixture should be creamy and orange-colored.
Step 4: Fold in the Whipped Topping
Add the thawed whipped topping.
Instead of vigorously mixing, gently fold it into the orange mixture using a spatula.
Fold from the bottom of the bowl upward.
Continue until the mixture is evenly combined and fluffy.
Don’t overmix
The goal is to keep as much air as possible in the whipped topping.
Gentle folding produces a lighter, more mousse-like texture.
Step 5: Add the Fruit
Make sure the mandarin oranges and crushed pineapple are very well drained.
Excess liquid can make Orange Fluff watery.
Gently fold in:
- Mandarin oranges
- Crushed pineapple
Try not to crush the orange segments.
Whole pieces of mandarin orange give the dessert a much better texture.
Step 6: Add the Marshmallows
Fold in 1½ cups mini marshmallows.
They add a soft, chewy texture and make the dessert more traditional.
If you love marshmallows, you can increase the amount slightly.
Step 7: Add Coconut
If using coconut, gently fold in ½ cup shredded coconut.
Coconut is optional, but it gives the Orange Fluff a tropical flavor that works especially well with the pineapple and mandarin oranges.
If you’re serving people who don’t like coconut, simply leave it out.
Step 8: Chill
Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap.
Place it in the refrigerator for at least 3–4 hours.
For the best texture, let it chill overnight.
During chilling:
- The gelatin mixture sets slightly.
- The marshmallows soften.
- The flavors blend together.
- The dessert becomes thicker and fluffier.
Step 9: Serve
Before serving, gently stir the mixture once.
Transfer it to a large serving bowl or individual dessert cups.
For decoration, top with:
- Mandarin orange segments
- A little whipped topping
- Orange zest
- Mini marshmallows
- Shredded coconut
Serve cold.
🍊 Extra-Creamy Orange Fluff Version
If you want a richer, creamier dessert, use:
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 8 oz whipped topping
- ½ cup sour cream
Add the sour cream when mixing the cream cheese.
The sour cream gives the dessert a slight tang that balances the sweetness.
🍊 Easy 5-Ingredient Orange Fluff
If you want the simplest possible version, use:
- 1 package orange gelatin
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 container whipped topping
- 1 can mandarin oranges
- 1½ cups mini marshmallows
Dissolve the gelatin in boiling water, allow it to cool, then fold in the whipped topping, drained oranges, and marshmallows.
Chill for 3–4 hours.
This version is lighter and doesn’t contain cream cheese.
Tips for the Best Orange Fluff
Drain the fruit extremely well
This is one of the most important steps.
Even a small amount of extra liquid can make the dessert runny.
Cool the gelatin
Never pour piping-hot gelatin directly into whipped topping or cream cheese.
Let it cool first.
Soften the cream cheese
Room-temperature cream cheese blends much more smoothly.
Don’t overmix
Gentle folding keeps the dessert light and fluffy.
Chill long enough
Although you can technically eat it after a couple of hours, 4 hours or overnight gives you a much better consistency.
Use fresh orange zest
A little orange zest gives the dessert a much stronger natural orange aroma without making it overly sweet.
Make It Ahead
Orange Fluff is an excellent make-ahead dessert.
You can prepare it the day before serving and keep it refrigerated.
In fact, making it the night before often improves the texture because the marshmallows have time to soften and the flavors have time to develop.
Keep it covered and refrigerated until ready to serve.
Storage
Store Orange Fluff in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
It is best enjoyed within 2–3 days.
The fruit will gradually release liquid, so the dessert may become slightly less fluffy after several days.
I don’t recommend freezing it because the whipped topping and fruit can develop an undesirable texture after thawing.
🍊 Perfect Orange Fluff
For the best classic version, I recommend:
Orange gelatin + cream cheese + whipped topping + mandarin oranges + pineapple + mini marshmallows + a little orange zest.
The result is creamy, fluffy, fruity, sweet, and wonderfully refreshing—with little bursts of juicy mandarin orange throughout.
