Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich

This air fryer grilled cheese is crispy, buttery, golden brown on the outside and wonderfully gooey and melted inside. It takes just a few minutes and is a great way to make grilled cheese without standing over a skillet.Servings: 2 sandwiches
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 6–8 minutes
Total time: About 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • 2 tbsp softened butter
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 slices American cheese (optional, but gives an extra-creamy melt)
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • Pinch of black pepper (optional)

Optional additions

  • Thinly sliced tomato
  • Cooked bacon
  • Jalapeños
  • Caramelized onions
  • Pickles
  • A little Dijon mustard

Instructions

1. Preheat the air fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.

Preheating helps the bread begin crisping immediately.

2. Prepare the bread

Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter over one side of each slice of bread.

Make sure you reach all the way to the edges.

For extra flavor, mix the butter with a little garlic powder and black pepper.

3. Assemble the sandwiches

Place two slices of bread butter-side down.

Layer the cheese evenly over the bread.

For an extra-gooey sandwich, use cheddar together with American cheese.

Place the remaining bread slices on top with the buttered sides facing upward.

Press the sandwich together gently.

4. Secure the sandwich

Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket.

If your bread is very light or your air fryer has a strong fan, place a small heat-safe rack or trivet over the sandwiches to keep the top slice from lifting.

Don’t use anything that isn’t specifically heat-safe.

5. Air fry

Cook at 375°F (190°C) for about 3–4 minutes.

Carefully open the basket and flip the sandwiches.

Cook for another 3–4 minutes.

The bread should be deep golden brown and crispy, while the cheese should be completely melted.

If you prefer a darker, crunchier crust, cook for another 30–60 seconds.

6. Rest briefly

Remove the sandwiches and let them rest for 1–2 minutes before cutting.

This allows the melted cheese to settle slightly.

Cut diagonally and serve while hot.

⭐ Tips for the Best Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

Use softened butter

Soft butter spreads much more evenly than cold butter, giving you a beautifully golden crust.

Don’t use too much butter

A thin layer is enough. Excess butter can drip into the air fryer and make the bread greasy.

Choose good melting cheese

Cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, Gouda, Gruyère, and mozzarella all melt well.

Don’t overcrowd the basket

Leave enough space for hot air to circulate around the sandwiches.

Watch the final minute

Air fryers vary considerably. Once the bread starts turning golden, it can brown very quickly.

🧀 Delicious Variations

Garlic Parmesan Grilled Cheese

Mix softened butter with garlic powder and Parmesan before spreading it on the bread.

Bacon Grilled Cheese

Add 2–3 strips of cooked crispy bacon before closing the sandwich.

Jalapeño Popper

Add sliced pickled or fresh jalapeños and a little cream cheese along with cheddar.

Tomato Grilled Cheese

Add thin tomato slices, but pat them dry first so they don’t make the sandwich soggy.

Caramelized Onion & Gruyère

Add caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese for a richer, more sophisticated version.

🍅 What to Serve With It

Air fryer grilled cheese is especially good with:

  • Tomato soup
  • Creamy tomato basil soup
  • Potato soup
  • Pickles
  • Coleslaw
  • A simple green salad

🔥 Extra-crispy trick

For an especially crunchy sandwich, use slightly stale sourdough or sturdy white bread, butter it right to the edges, and cook at 375°F (190°C) until deeply golden. The sturdy bread stays crisp while the cheese melts beautifully inside.
