🌿 My Nana’s Simple Hack for Phlegm & Mucus in the Chest and Throat
A traditional remedy that can soothe the throat and make mucus easier to clear is warm honey and water.
🍯 The Remedy
You’ll need:
-
1 cup warm water
-
1–2 teaspoons honey
-
Optional: a little lemon for flavor
How to use it:
-
Add the honey to warm—not boiling—water.
-
Stir well.
-
Sip it slowly, particularly in the evening or when your throat feels irritated.
-
Stay well hydrated throughout the day.
🌬️ Why It May Help
Warm fluids can help keep mucus from becoming thick, while honey can soothe an irritated throat and reduce coughing. It won’t literally “pull” mucus out of your lungs, but it may make symptoms more comfortable.
⚠️ Important
-
Never give honey to babies under 1 year old.
-
Don’t rely on home remedies if you’re having difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, or symptoms that are getting significantly worse.
-
Persistent phlegm or a chronic cough deserves medical evaluation, particularly if you smoke or have asthma/COPD.
There isn’t a proven one-minute or overnight remedy that completely clears chest mucus. Hydration, treating the underlying cause, and allowing yourself to cough mucus up are generally more useful.
