Everyone Should Unplug This Kitchen Appliance Before Going to Sleep to Reduce Fire Risk
There isn’t one single kitchen appliance that everyone must unplug every night. However, small countertop appliances that produce heat deserve particular attention because leaving them operating unattended can increase fire risk.
1. Toasters
A toaster can contain crumbs and food debris that may ignite if the appliance malfunctions or remains energized. Unplugging it after use and regularly cleaning out crumbs is a simple precaution.
2. Toaster Ovens and Air Fryers
These appliances generate significant heat. Don’t leave them operating while you’re asleep or away from home unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically allow a particular unattended function.
Allow them to cool completely and keep them away from curtains, paper towels, cabinets, and other combustible materials.
3. Coffee Makers
Many modern coffee makers have automatic shutoff, but older or simpler models may remain powered for long periods. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and use the automatic shutoff feature if available.
4. Slow Cookers and Other Designed-to-Operate Appliances
Not every heated appliance should automatically be unplugged overnight. Some appliances, such as slow cookers, are specifically designed to operate for extended periods. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions rather than assuming every appliance should be disconnected.
A Simple Nighttime Safety Check
Before going to bed:
- Turn off appliances that aren’t designed to remain operating.
- Unplug small heat-producing appliances when practical.
- Keep electrical cords away from hot surfaces and water.
- Don’t use appliances with damaged cords or plugs.
- Keep flammable materials away from stovetops and heating appliances.
- Make sure smoke alarms are working properly.
The safest rule is not “unplug one particular appliance,” but avoid leaving unnecessary heat-producing appliances running unattended and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
