Oven-Baked Layered Potato Ring
Ingredients
-
5–6 medium potatoes
-
1½ cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
-
1 cup heavy cream
-
½ cup milk
-
2 tablespoons melted butter
-
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
-
1 teaspoon dried thyme
-
½ teaspoon black pepper
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon paprika
-
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
-
Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
Instructions
1. Prepare the Oven and Pan
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
Generously grease a 9-inch springform pan or a round baking dish with butter.
2. Slice the Potatoes
Peel the potatoes if desired and slice them very thinly and evenly, preferably using a mandoline.
Try to keep the slices around 2–3 mm thick so they cook evenly.
3. Make the Cream Mixture
In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, melted butter, garlic, thyme, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
4. Build the Layers
Arrange a layer of potato slices around the bottom of the pan, slightly overlapping each slice.
Drizzle or brush with a little of the cream mixture.
Sprinkle with a small amount of mozzarella or cheddar.
Continue making layers of:
Potatoes → cream mixture → cheese
until all the potatoes are used.
Press the layers down gently as you go.
5. Finish the Top
Pour any remaining cream mixture over the potatoes.
Sprinkle the Parmesan and remaining shredded cheese over the top.
6. Bake
Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil.
Bake for approximately 45 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25–35 minutes, until the potatoes are completely tender and the top is golden brown.
For an extra-crispy top, switch to the broiler/grill setting for 2–3 minutes, watching carefully.
7. Rest and Remove
Remove the potato ring from the oven and let it rest for 10–15 minutes.
Carefully release it from the springform pan and transfer it to a serving plate.
Garnish with fresh parsley.
Tips
-
Slice the potatoes as evenly as possible so they cook at the same rate.
-
Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes work particularly well.
-
Don’t add too much cream between the layers; you want the potatoes to hold their shape.
-
For extra flavor, add thinly sliced onions or cooked bacon between the layers.
-
A mixture of mozzarella and Parmesan gives the top a delicious combination of stretchiness and browning.
