What Your Ears Can Reveal About Your Health

Your ears can sometimes provide clues about your health, but they cannot diagnose diseases on their own. Changes in hearing, the ear canal, or the skin around the ear may be worth paying attention to.

1. Hearing Changes

Gradual hearing loss can occur with aging and repeated exposure to loud sounds. Sudden hearing loss, however, should be evaluated urgently because early treatment may be important.

2. Ringing in the Ears

Tinnitus can cause ringing, buzzing, or other sounds without an outside source. It may be related to hearing loss, loud-noise exposure, certain medications, or other conditions.

3. Earwax Buildup

Excess earwax can cause temporary hearing loss, fullness, itching, or ringing. Cotton swabs should not be pushed deep into the ear because they can push wax farther inside or injure the ear.

4. Ear Pain or Drainage

Pain, swelling, itching, or fluid coming from the ear can occur with infections or other ear problems. Persistent or severe symptoms should be checked by a healthcare professional.

5. Changes Around the Ear

Skin changes, persistent sores, unusual growths, or a lump that does not heal should be medically evaluated rather than assumed to be harmless.

Bottom line: Your ears can provide useful clues about hearing and certain health problems, but viral claims that a particular ear shape or feature reveals your overall health are not reliable. Pay more attention to new symptoms and changes than to the appearance of your ears alone.
