The Kitchen Appliance You Should Unplug Before Going to Sleep
There isn’t one kitchen appliance that everyone must unplug “at all costs.” However, appliances that generate heat can pose a greater fire risk if they malfunction or are accidentally left operating.
1. Toaster
A toaster is a good example of an appliance worth switching off and unplugging after use. Food crumbs can accumulate inside, and an electrical fault could cause overheating.
2. Toaster Oven and Countertop Grills
These appliances generate substantial heat. Make sure they’re switched off after cooking, and unplug them if the manufacturer’s instructions don’t require them to remain connected.
3. Coffee Makers and Electric Kettles
If these appliances aren’t specifically designed to stay powered continuously, turning them off and unplugging them before bed is a sensible precaution.
4. Check for Damaged Cords
Frayed cords, loose plugs, scorch marks, or plugs that become unusually hot can indicate an electrical problem. Stop using a damaged appliance until it has been properly repaired or replaced.
5. Don’t Forget the Stove
Before going to sleep, check that all stovetop burners and the oven are completely off. Keep paper towels, cloth, packaging, and other flammable materials away from cooking appliances.
The Simple Nighttime Habit
Rather than focusing on one “secret” appliance, make a quick kitchen safety check before bed: turn off heat-producing appliances, unplug countertop appliances that don’t need to remain powered, and make sure the stove and oven are off.
This simple habit can reduce avoidable electrical and cooking-related fire risks.
