10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg You Should Know

A blood clot in a deep vein of the leg is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It can sometimes occur without obvious symptoms, but recognizing possible warning signs is important because a clot can become a serious medical problem.

1. Swelling in One Leg

Sudden swelling, particularly when it affects one leg rather than both, can be a warning sign.

2. Leg Pain or Tenderness

A clot may cause aching, tenderness, or discomfort, often in the calf or thigh.

3. Warmth

The affected area may feel noticeably warmer than the surrounding skin.

4. Skin Redness or Discoloration

The skin over the affected area can become red, darker, or otherwise discolored.

5. A Feeling of Tightness or Heaviness

Some people describe the affected leg as unusually heavy, tight, or uncomfortable.

6. Calf Discomfort When Walking

Pain or discomfort may become more noticeable when standing or walking.

7. Swelling That Develops Suddenly

A rapid change in the size or appearance of one leg deserves medical attention, particularly when accompanied by pain or warmth.

8. Enlarged or More Noticeable Veins

Veins near the surface may become more prominent when circulation is affected.

9. Unexplained Leg Symptoms After Prolonged Immobility

The risk of DVT can increase after situations involving prolonged sitting or immobility, such as a long journey, hospitalization, or recovery after surgery.

10. Sometimes There Are No Symptoms

This is important: DVT can occur without noticeable warning signs. Risk factors and medical evaluation are therefore important even when symptoms are mild or absent.

When to Get Urgent Help

A DVT can sometimes travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. Seek emergency medical attention immediately for sudden difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, or a rapid heartbeat, particularly if you also have symptoms suggestive of a leg clot.

If you develop unexplained swelling, pain, warmth, or discoloration in one leg, contact a healthcare professional promptly rather than trying to diagnose a clot at home.
