10 Things You Shouldn’t Be Storing on Your Kitchen Countertop
Kitchen counters are convenient, but leaving certain foods, appliances, and household items out can create clutter, encourage contamination, or shorten the shelf life of food.
1. Bread
Bread can become stale more quickly when exposed to air and heat. Keep it sealed in a suitable bread box or container away from direct sunlight.
2. Fresh Produce That Needs Refrigeration
Cut fruits and vegetables, berries, leafy greens, and other perishable produce should generally be refrigerated rather than left on the counter.
3. Raw Meat and Seafood
Raw meat, poultry, and seafood should never be stored on the countertop. Keep them refrigerated until they are ready to be prepared.
4. Opened Dairy Products
Milk, cream, yogurt, and other perishable dairy products need refrigeration. Leaving them out for extended periods can allow harmful bacteria to multiply.
5. Cooking Oils Near Heat
Although many cooking oils can be stored at room temperature, keeping them beside a stove or in direct sunlight can accelerate quality deterioration. A cool, dark cabinet is usually better.
6. Spices in Direct Sunlight
Heat, light, and moisture can gradually reduce the flavor and quality of spices. Store them in a cool, dry cabinet instead.
7. Garlic and Onions in Plastic Bags
Whole garlic and onions generally benefit from a cool, dry, well-ventilated location. Sealed plastic can trap moisture and encourage spoilage.
8. Cleaning Products
Dishwashing liquids, sprays, disinfectants, and other cleaning chemicals are better kept away from food-preparation surfaces, especially where children or pets could reach them.
9. Medicines and Supplements
The kitchen can become warm and humid, particularly around the stove and sink. Many medicines should be stored according to their specific label instructions, often in a cool, dry place.
10. Dirty Sponges and Dishcloths
Wet sponges and cloths can harbor microorganisms. Allow them to dry properly and replace or wash them regularly rather than leaving them constantly damp on the counter.
A Cleaner, Safer Countertop
Keeping the countertop mostly clear makes food preparation easier and reduces opportunities for spills, contamination, and clutter. Items that don’t need to be immediately accessible are usually better stored in appropriate cabinets, drawers, or the refrigerator.
