If Your Feet Swell, It Can Be a Sign of Several Conditions

Detail

Swollen feet or ankles are called peripheral edema. They happen when excess fluid collects in the tissues. While swelling is sometimes harmless, new, persistent, or unexplained swelling shouldn’t automatically be attributed to aging.

1. Prolonged Standing or Sitting

Being on your feet for many hours—or sitting for a long time—can cause fluid to collect around the ankles. This is often temporary and improves after movement or elevating the legs.

2. Medication Side Effects

Some medicines can cause ankle swelling. Amlodipine and other calcium-channel blockers, certain anti-inflammatory medicines, steroids, and some diabetes medications are examples.

Don’t stop a prescribed medication without discussing the swelling with your doctor.

3. Vein Problems

Chronic venous insufficiency can cause swelling that becomes worse later in the day and improves after lying down or elevating the legs. Varicose veins and skin changes around the ankles can sometimes occur as well.

4. Heart Problems

Heart failure can cause swelling in both feet and ankles, often accompanied by shortness of breath, reduced exercise tolerance, or rapid weight gain from fluid. Swelling alone does not mean you have heart failure.

5. Kidney Problems

Kidney disease can contribute to fluid retention. Swelling may also occur around the eyes or elsewhere in the body, and urine changes can sometimes accompany it.

6. Liver Disease

Certain liver conditions can cause fluid accumulation in the legs and abdomen, particularly when disease is advanced.

7. A Blood Clot

Sudden swelling in one leg, particularly when accompanied by pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness, can be a sign of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and requires prompt medical assessment.

🚨 When to Seek Urgent Care

Get urgent medical help if swelling occurs with:

  • Sudden shortness of breath

  • Chest pain

  • Coughing up blood

  • Fainting or severe dizziness

  • Sudden swelling and pain in one leg

What You Can Do

For mild swelling after prolonged sitting or standing, walking regularly, avoiding long periods in one position, and elevating your legs may help.

Bottom line: Swollen feet are not a clear sign of one particular disease. The cause can range from prolonged standing to medication effects or heart, kidney, liver, or vein problems. Persistent or unexplained swelling deserves a medical evaluation.
