Stroke Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
A stroke can happen suddenly, and there is no reliable set of symptoms that appears exactly one month beforehand. However, some people experience a transient ischemic attack (TIA)—sometimes called a “mini-stroke”—before a major stroke.
A TIA causes stroke-like symptoms when blood flow to part of the brain is temporarily interrupted. The symptoms may disappear within minutes or hours, but that does not mean the danger has passed.
1. Sudden Numbness or Weakness
Sudden weakness or numbness—especially affecting the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body—is a major warning sign.
2. Sudden Trouble Speaking
Slurred speech, difficulty finding words, or suddenly having trouble understanding what someone is saying can be a sign of a stroke or TIA.
3. Sudden Vision Problems
Sudden blurred or lost vision in one or both eyes should be taken seriously, particularly when it occurs alongside other neurological symptoms.
4. Sudden Trouble Walking
Unexpected dizziness, loss of balance, difficulty coordinating movements, or trouble walking can occur with a stroke.
5. A Sudden, Severe Headache
A sudden, extremely severe headache—especially one that is unusual for you and occurs with neurological symptoms—requires urgent medical attention.
Remember FAST
A simple way to recognize common stroke symptoms is FAST:
-
F — Face: Is one side of the face drooping?
-
A — Arms: Can the person raise both arms normally?
-
S — Speech: Is their speech strange, slurred, or difficult?
-
T — Time: Call emergency medical services immediately.
Don’t Wait for Symptoms to Disappear
One of the most dangerous mistakes is assuming that a symptom isn’t serious because it goes away.
A TIA can be a warning that a more serious stroke may follow. Even if the symptoms completely disappear, urgent medical evaluation is still important.
The Bottom Line
Don’t wait for a supposed “one-month warning.” Stroke symptoms can occur suddenly, and every minute matters. If someone develops sudden facial drooping, weakness, speech difficulty, vision loss, severe dizziness, or another possible stroke symptom, seek emergency medical care immediately.
