7 Warning Signs That May Indicate a Serious Heart Problem
Heart problems don’t always begin with dramatic chest pain. Some warning signs can be subtle, and symptoms can differ between people.
1. Chest pressure, squeezing, or discomfort
A feeling of pressure, heaviness, squeezing, fullness, or burning in the center of the chest can be a warning sign of heart attack or reduced blood flow to the heart.
2. Shortness of breath
Unexplained breathlessness—especially with chest discomfort, exertion, or suddenly at rest—can occur with heart problems.
3. Pain spreading to other areas
Heart-related pain can spread from the chest to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen. It isn’t necessarily limited to the left arm.
4. Unusual sweating
Sudden cold or clammy sweating, particularly when accompanied by chest discomfort, nausea, or weakness, can occur during a heart attack.
5. Nausea, vomiting, or unusual indigestion
Some people—particularly women, older adults, and people with diabetes—may experience nausea or upper-abdominal discomfort rather than obvious chest pain.
6. Sudden dizziness or fainting
Unexplained fainting or severe lightheadedness can sometimes result from an abnormal heart rhythm or inadequate blood flow.
7. Unusual fatigue or reduced exercise tolerance
A new, unexplained drop in your ability to perform normal activities can sometimes accompany heart disease, although fatigue has many other causes.
🚨 Don’t wait if these symptoms are severe
Call your local emergency service immediately if you have chest pressure/discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes or keeps returning, especially if it occurs with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or neck.
Don’t drive yourself if you may be having a heart attack.
Also, one symptom by itself does not prove that your heart is in danger. Many of these symptoms have non-cardiac causes, but sudden or severe symptoms should be evaluated promptly.
