Sebaceous Cysts Explained: Main Causes and Safe Home Care

A sebaceous cyst is a closed, usually slow-growing lump under the skin. The term is commonly used for several types of cysts, although many are technically epidermoid cysts, which form from skin cells rather than directly from sebaceous glands. They often appear on the face, neck, chest, back, or other areas of the body.

What Causes Them?

1. Blocked skin structures
A cyst can develop when skin cells become trapped beneath the skin and continue producing keratin, causing a sac to gradually fill.

2. Damage to the skin
Injury or irritation can sometimes contribute to the formation of an epidermoid cyst.

3. Hair-follicle problems
Some cysts develop from changes or blockage involving hair follicles.

4. Previous inflammation
Certain skin conditions can increase the likelihood of developing cysts.

Safe Home Care

If a cyst is small, painless, and not infected, it may simply be monitored.

  • Warm compress: Place a clean, warm (not hot) cloth over the area for about 10–15 minutes, several times a day. This may soothe tenderness and encourage natural drainage in some cases.
  • Keep the area clean: Gently wash the surrounding skin and avoid unnecessary irritation.
  • Don’t squeeze or puncture it: Trying to pop a cyst can introduce bacteria, cause inflammation, and increase the risk of scarring or infection.
  • Avoid harsh home remedies: Products such as strong acids, essential oils, or other irritating substances can damage the skin and aren’t proven treatments for removing a cyst.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Seek medical attention if the lump becomes red, increasingly painful, swollen, warm, rapidly enlarges, or starts draining, as these can be signs of infection or inflammation. A new or unusual lump should also be evaluated if you’re uncertain what it is.

A healthcare professional can confirm the diagnosis. If a cyst repeatedly returns or is bothersome, complete surgical removal of the cyst and its surrounding sac is often the definitive treatment. Simply draining it may relieve the swelling temporarily but can allow it to come back.

Important: There isn’t a reliable home remedy that permanently dissolves or removes a true cyst. Avoid attempting to cut, drain, or pop one yourself.
