Put a Glass of Salt in Your Car: What This Trick Can and Can’t Do

Leaving a glass or container of salt in a car is sometimes promoted as a simple way to reduce moisture or odors. Salt can absorb some moisture from the air, but a small glass of ordinary salt is not a powerful car dehumidifier and should not be treated as a guaranteed solution.

1. It May Absorb Some Moisture

Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it can attract and hold moisture under suitable conditions. In a humid environment, some moisture may collect around the salt.

However, the amount of moisture a small container can remove from an entire vehicle is limited.

2. It May Help With Mild Dampness

If your car occasionally feels slightly damp, a moisture-absorbing product designed for vehicles will generally be more practical and predictable than an open glass of salt.

3. It Doesn’t Fix Persistent Condensation

If the windows repeatedly fog up or the carpets remain damp, there may be a more important cause, such as wet floor mats, a leaking door or window seal, blocked drains, or excessive moisture inside the vehicle.

Finding and fixing the source is more effective than relying on salt.

4. Be Careful With Spilled Salt

Don’t leave an unstable open glass where it could tip over while driving. Salt can also contribute to corrosion if it gets onto metal surfaces and becomes wet.

A sealed or purpose-designed moisture absorber is a safer choice.

5. It Doesn’t Remove Dangerous Car Odors

Salt should not be expected to eliminate odors caused by mold, mildew, spilled liquids, or contaminated upholstery. Those problems require cleaning and, when necessary, professional inspection.

Bottom line: A glass of salt may absorb a small amount of moisture, but it is not a miracle car-care trick. If your vehicle has persistent condensation, dampness, or musty odors, find and fix the underlying source instead.
