What Happens If You Always Sleep on Your Right Side?
Sleeping on your right side is a normal and generally safe sleeping position. It does not automatically mean that something is wrong with your health, and there is no reliable evidence that sleeping on the right side reveals a person’s personality or causes disease by itself.
However, your preferred sleeping position can affect comfort, digestion, breathing, and pressure on certain parts of the body.
1. It May Affect Acid Reflux
For people who experience heartburn or acid reflux, sleeping position can make a noticeable difference. Research has generally found that left-side sleeping can reduce nighttime reflux compared with right-side sleeping in people with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
If you regularly wake with heartburn, a sour taste, or burning in your chest, changing your sleeping position may be worth trying.
2. It Can Be Comfortable for Your Body
Side sleeping can help keep some people comfortable by reducing pressure on the lower back compared with certain other positions. A pillow between the knees can also help keep the hips and spine in a more comfortable alignment.
The best position ultimately depends on your individual body and whether you wake without pain or stiffness.
3. It May Affect Snoring and Breathing
Side sleeping is often preferable to sleeping flat on the back for people who snore or have certain breathing problems during sleep. Sleeping on the side can help keep the upper airway from becoming as restricted as it can in some people when lying on their back.
If you regularly snore loudly, wake up gasping or choking, or feel unusually tired during the day, discuss these symptoms with a healthcare professional.
4. It Can Put Pressure on Your Shoulder
If you sleep on the same side every night, your shoulder, hip, or arm can experience prolonged pressure. This may contribute to morning soreness or numbness in some people.
If you wake with discomfort, try changing sides occasionally or use a pillow that supports your head without forcing your neck into an awkward position.
5. What About the Heart?
You may have heard that sleeping on the right side is dangerous for the heart. For most healthy people, there is no reason to avoid right-side sleeping simply because of the heart.
Some people with particular heart conditions may find one position more comfortable than another, but this is individual and should be discussed with their healthcare professional.
6. Pregnancy Is Different
During pregnancy, sleep-position recommendations can change as pregnancy progresses. Pregnant people are often advised to settle into a comfortable side-sleeping position, particularly later in pregnancy, while following guidance from their healthcare professional.
The Bottom Line
Sleeping on your right side is not inherently harmful. For some people it is simply the most comfortable position, while others may notice more reflux or shoulder discomfort when using it.
If you sleep comfortably, breathe normally, and wake feeling well, there is generally no need to change your position simply because you prefer your right side. If you regularly experience nighttime heartburn, significant pain, loud snoring, gasping, or persistent daytime tiredness, the underlying problem deserves more attention than the sleeping position itself.
