Early Signs of Rosacea You Shouldn’t Ignore

Persistent redness around the nose and cheeks can sometimes be an early sign of rosacea, a common skin condition that often develops gradually. It is frequently mistaken for ordinary flushing or sensitive skin.

Common Early Symptoms

  • Frequent facial flushing: The face may become noticeably red after heat, exercise, spicy foods, stress, or temperature changes.
  • Redness that lasts longer: Unlike temporary flushing, rosacea-related redness may become more persistent over time.
  • Small visible blood vessels: Fine red or purple lines may become noticeable around the nose and cheeks.
  • Burning or stinging: Some people experience warmth, tingling, burning, or increased sensitivity.
  • Dry or irritated skin: The affected area may feel rough, tight, or unusually sensitive.
  • Small bumps or pimples: Some forms of rosacea can cause acne-like bumps without being ordinary acne.

What Can Trigger Flare-Ups?

Common triggers include sunlight, hot weather, very hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and sudden temperature changes. Triggers vary from person to person.

What Should You Do?

Gentle skin care can help reduce irritation. Use a mild cleanser, avoid harsh scrubs, moisturize regularly, and protect exposed skin from sunlight. If redness is persistent, worsening, painful, or accompanied by eye irritation, a dermatologist can determine whether rosacea or another skin condition is responsible.

The redness shown in a photograph should not be used to diagnose rosacea or another disease. Similar changes can occur with other skin conditions, irritation, sun exposure, or naturally visible blood vessels.
